I was trying to make plans with two friends on different days. When I talked to the first one, he said, “Call me that morning and I’ll see if I’m up to it.”
Internally I was thinking, “I can’t make a plan like that.”
When I spoke with my other friend, he said, “Yeah, them definite maybes won’t do, will they?”
I laughed at the comment, but it made me think about something. How many times do we give God a definite maybe?
We say we’ll completely commit, tomorrow. Or after this or that happens. We’ll commit everything except that one thing we’re holding onto. We say yes, but our actions say maybe.
Can I tell you, a definite maybe won’t do.
We’ve got to be fully committed. But if you haven’t fully committed and want to, there’s good news. When we read the parable of the two sons in Matthew 21:28–32, we get some insight.
The first son, when asked to work, says, “I will not,” but later changes his mind and goes. The second son answers, “I go, sir,” but never goes.
Jesus then asks which one did the will of his father.
Obviously, it was the first.
The first son started with a definite no, but repented and turned it into a definite yes. The second son gave all the right words, but his actions turned his yes into a definite maybe.
We can repent like the first son, or we can keep living with the definite maybe of the second.
Let’s make sure we aren’t giving God definite maybes. Let’s give Him a definite yes, and then do what He asks.
