A Broken Vessel

Psalm 31:12 (KJV)

“I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.”

This verse from the Book of Psalms is raw, personal, and deeply human. David is expressing what it feels like to be completely discarded, unseen, and without value. When he says that he is forgotten as a dead man out of mind we have to understand the time that David lived. In ancient times, once someone died and was buried, they quickly faded from daily thought. There were no photos, no digital memory, they were simply gone. David is saying in essence that people don’t think about me anymore or I’ve been erased from their minds.

Then he writes I am like a broken vessel. A vessel (pottery jar) in biblical times had purpose. It may be holding water, oil, or grain. But once broken, it couldn’t hold anything. It was thrown away as it was considered useless. David expresses that he no longer feels useful. He feels like something with no purpose left.

Have you found yourself here before? Feeling abandoned by people? Like your life no longer matters to anyone. Even to the point of questioning, “Does God still see me?”

There’s an emotional weight here: not just loneliness, but invisibility. Or maybe like the vessel you feel broken beyond repair. Maybe you feel like you’ve lost your value or usefulness to God.

Stop for a second and do this: take a deep breath in and breathe it out. Got it? Good if you are breathing then you matter. God still sees you. You are not invisible. Nor are you broken beyond repair or useless.

Let’s keep reading in Psalm 31 But I trust in you, Lord. I say, “You are my God.” My whole life is in your hands. Save me from the hands of my enemies. Save me from those who are chasing me. May you look on me with favor. Save me because your love is faithful (Psalm 31:14-16 NIRV).

That is powerful that in the same Psalm and David says this. Then look how he ends the Psalm.

Psalm 31:23-24 (KJV) O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer. Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

David teaches us that you can feel broken and still be in God’s hand at the same time. You can feel faithless and still be faithful. Just because we feel forgotten, useless, broken beyond repair, etc, does not mean that we are. Our hope is not in how we feel, but in what we know. So lift up your head and hope yet again.

Psalm 42:11 NLT

Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again my Savior and my God!
