At one of my jobs I was a lead man. In this position one thing I did was work with new hires. I always liked to ask them if there was something that they preferred to be called. I did this because I know many people have nicknames that they have carried most of their lives and I wanted to accommodate that. Well we had one particular fella that I asked this question and he told me that he wanted to be called Tank. Now, he didn’t look like someone that would be called Tank nor did he act that way. Later in the week he was hitting something with a hammer and trying to break it loose. I stepped up behind him and said: “you want to be called Tank, but you hit like Tinker Bell, I’m going to call you Tink.” That became his name from that day forward. You see he wanted to make his own nickname instead of being given one.
Just like you can’t choose your own nicknames and you can’t choose your calling. Your calling is what God has given you to do. You don’t just get to say, “I’m going to be a preacher, Sunday school teacher, singer, missionary, etc.” No, you have to do what God calls you to do. I had a dear friend of mine once who said, “I thought God called me to be a preacher, but God called me to clean toilets.” He served others, he helped at the church, he fit in to help anywhere he could.
Don’t know what your calling is? Start serving, because we are all called to serve. Show up early and turn the lights on at church, stay late and turn them off, sweep the floors, etc. Find a place to help. If you serve in this capacity, God may use you in other places. If not, be happy that you got to serve in some way. Another place to serve that gets overlooked, but is one of the most important places to serve is being a prayer warrior. Devote yourself to prayer and God will use you. Your calling may not be glorious, but if God gave it to you and entrusted you with it do it with all your heart.
Ecclesiastes 9:10 KJV Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
