We find the story of the woman at the well in John chapter 4. Jesus meets this Samaritan woman at a well near Sychar. Do you know why Jesus met her here? Because that’s where she was. I know that’s a simple statement, but follow me for a moment.
We have to meet people where they are. This may be a physical location, but it may be a spiritual location. By a spiritual location it could be their knowledge of the Word or spiritual things. Let’s look in the book of Hebrews for more understanding.
Hebrews 5:12-14 ISV In fact, though by now you should be teachers, you still need someone to teach you the basic truths of God’s word. You have become people who need milk instead of solid food. For everyone who lives on milk is still a baby and does not yet know the difference between right and wrong. But solid food is for mature people, whose minds are trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.
Now, yes this is talking about those who should have grown to eat solid food (or strong meat as the King James says), but are still having to take in the things that are easily digested. There is another lesson here though. Everyone will find themselves in the infancy stage of spiritual things needing the “milk” of the Word instead of the “meat” of the Word. If you come across someone that is in infancy stage and you try to feed them the things that are too hard for them to digest, you can kill them. They may not know Genesis from Revelations, so we can’t overwhelm them with things too deep for their understanding. We are instructed to edify one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11 KJV) meaning to build each other up. We are to use the Word to help others grow and not stunt their growth.
We have to use wisdom and the guidance of the Spirit when talking to others to speak the words of life. To edify them and nourish them in truth. To help others grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18 KJV).
Colossians 4:5 AMP Conduct yourself with wisdom in your interactions with outsiders (non-believers), make the most of each opportunity [treating it as something precious].
