I once asked a friend of mine to weld something up for me. I started explaining in detail how I was thinking of doing it. He stopped me and said, “John, I’m the welder. You tell me what you want done and I’ll figure out how to do it.” Have you ever had someone ask for your help and then proceed to tell you how to do it? Or they get right in your way doing the very thing that they asked you to do?
How often do we do this to God? We ask for His help, but then start trying to solve the problem on our own. Or we start giving God advice on how to fix the problem. God created the heaven and the earth and never asked for our help. If you haven’t figured out yet, God doesn’t need our advice. He doesn’t need us to figure it out for Him. As it says in Isaiah 40:13-14 (KJV) 13 Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him? 14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?
Let’s look in Genesis for a moment.
Genesis 2:21-22 KJV 21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
Why did God put Adam to sleep to remove his rib? He could have taken the rib while Adam was awake. If you read the previous verses God had already tasked Adam with dressing the garden and naming the animals. God had given Adam to do what Adam could do. Adam had a need though that he had no power nor ability to provide for himself. This was something that only God could accomplish.
This is why I think God put Adam to sleep. Because He was establishing a principle. If you have a need that you do not have the ability to provide for, then give it to God and sleep. Let God handle it. We read this in Psalm 127:2 (KJV) It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
God will give us to do the things we can do and He will handle the rest. When raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus told them to roll the stone away. They could roll the stone away, but they couldn’t raise Lazarus from the dead.
There are situations that we have no power to fix. Adam could not make himself a helper. Mary and Martha could not bring Lazarus back. God had to do it. Sometimes we need help and there is absolutely nothing that we can do to fix it on our own.
Don’t you know that even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows (Luke 12:7 KJV). If God knows this tiniest, insignificant detail, then He knows what you need before you ask him (Matthew 6:8 ISV). If He knows about it then He cares about it.
So stop worrying over things you can’t fix. Stop losing sleep over problems that we can’t fix. Pray about it, put it in the hands of God and go to sleep.
Philippians 4:6-7 ISV 6 Never worry about anything. Instead, in every situation let your petitions be made known to God through prayers and requests, with thanksgiving. 7 Then God’s peace, which goes far beyond anything we can imagine, will guard your hearts and minds in union with the Messiah Jesus.
Psalm 46:10-11 NET 10 He says, “Stop your striving and recognize that I am God! I will be exalted over the nations! I will be exalted over the earth!” 11 The LORD who commands armies is on our side! The God of Jacob is our protector! (Selah)
I’ll just follow up with a little relationship advice. Adam needed a companion and he had to wait on God to provide one. Quit trying to find yourself a companion so hard. You can’t make it happen but God can. He’s got the perfect one for you, let him work it out.
