There are some interesting details about the story of David and Goliath that you may be unaware of. One is that David consistently refers to Goliath simply as “the Philistine” or an “uncircumcised Philistine” rather than by name or as a “giant”. By ignoring Goliath’s intimidating size and reputation, David focuses on his covenant with God, viewing the opponent as a mortal defying the Almighty rather than an insurmountable threat.
We also know that David was armed with a sling and stones, but Goliath only noticed the staff as we see in 1 Samuel 17:43 (KJV) And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? Many people don’t realize that when David brought a sling and stone to fight Goliath he was bringing a formidable weapon. As a matter of fact we see an army that used this in Judges 20:15-16 (KJV) And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men. Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
Then there lies something else here. King Saul was of the tribe of Benjamin. While David was of the tribe of Judah. This is worth mentioning because the army that slung stones was the tribe of Benjamin, meaning Saul should have had this knowledge and possibly capability.
What can we take away from this? Don’t tell God how big your giant or problem is. Tell your problem how big your God is. You are the one in covenant with God, not the problem. The enemy doesn’t know all the weapons that you hold in God. And no matter how small and unnoticed it is, it is powerfully effective in the hands of God. Don’t forget what your ancestors have taught you about the power of prayer, fasting and things of this nature. They work no matter who uses them.
You see we can look at one story and glean so many things that can help us in our walk with God. We can learn something from all scripture.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
