We find the story of Uriah in 2 Samuel 11. We know how he was betrayed and the evil things done to him. There has been much time attributed to talking about these things. There is something though that shouldn’t be overlooked. Uriah himself and his character.
David calls Uriah in and tries to send him home. The next morning it is discovered that Uriah did not go home, but slept with the servants. When asked about this, this was his response. Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing (2 Samuel 11:11 KJV). That is a most honorable thing. This is what I call the spirit of Uriah.
How can we apply the spirit of Uriah to our lives? There are missionaries that may go places that we may never get to go. They may be in the trenches fighting trying to reach lost souls. It’s costing them a lot to do what they are doing. How can we sit comfortably at home doing nothing? We may not be able to go there physically, but we can spiritually. We can pray for them. Prayer that interrupts our sleep schedule. Prayer that may interrupt our family time. Prayer that may interrupt our entertainment. Prayer that may cause us to miss meals. I’m not talking, “lay me down to sleep prayers,” but sacrificial prayers, intercessory prayers.
We can give financially to missions. We can skip that new bass boat, that new gun. We can skip a few expensive cups of coffee. We can skip eating out a few times. We can skip that new subscription to yet another streaming service.
Understand that I’m not saying that you can no longer enjoy the things of life. I’m saying if someone else is sacrificing for the kingdom then we should be too. We should be assisting them somehow.
The Word says in Hebrews 13:3 (KJV) Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.
This can not only be referring to those in physical bonds. It can also be referring to those bound by love, bound by Christ to deliver the Gospel. We should remember them as if we were bound with them and suffering with them. As if we were working beside them.
Pray and ask God what you need to do. Ask what you need to give. Let God put a country on your heart and pray for the missionaries there. Ask God for the spirit of Uriah.
2 Thessalonians 3:1-2 KJV 1 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you: 2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.
I have included a link where you can go and give to missions.
