The Second Heart

A calf muscle pump is the mechanism where your calf muscles contract to help push blood from your lower legs back to the heart. This vital pump, often called the “second heart,” enhances blood flow and is crucial for reducing blood pressure, improving circulation, and maintaining overall health. You can activate your calf muscle pump through activities like walking, which involves a continuous cycle of calf muscle contraction and relaxation that pumps blood upward. This assists the heart in maintaining proper blood circulation, especially in the lower extremities. Thus the calf muscles are aptly called the “second heart” because they perform a vital function in the circulatory system, supporting the heart by pumping blood back up to it against gravity.

Though that’s interesting, you may be wondering what that has to do with anything. Well we are the body of Christ, and members in particular(1 Corinthians 12:27 KJV). Each part of the body has its function to support the body. Now we know that Christ is the head of the church (Ephesians 5:23 KJV). The heart of the church though is the Pastor. God said in Jeremiah 3:15 (KJV) And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

So if the Pastor is the heart what is the second heart? The second heart are those that play a role in support of the church body and the ministry of the Pastor. These are people that walk in the Spirit helping maintain a proper flow of the Spirit. This support can be done in many different ways. Spending time in prayer lifting up the body, including the Pastor and his family. Ministering to others understanding that a Pastor cannot always attend unto every need that arises. Tending to things that take some pressure off of them. Financial support of the church and the cause of Christ.

We have to remember that we are all the body of Christ and that includes a Pastor. We must support each other, helping each other along this road that we travel together. So that there might be no disharmony in the body, but that its parts should have the same concern for each other (1 Corinthians 12:25 ISV).

Galatians 6:2 NET Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 NET Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, just as you are in fact doing.
