I have a habit of picking up nicknames. Throughout my life I have had many names that I was known by. Some of these are Little John, John John, Junior, Roy, John Boy, Brother John and I’m sure others that I have forgotten. For the people that called me by these names, that is my name. Honestly we all probably know someone that we only call them by their nicknames and not by their real name. We may not even
know their real name. Throughout the Bible, God was known by many names to different people. I would like to mention some of those names.
El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty), El Elyon (The Most High God), Adonai (Lord, Master), Yahweh or YHWH (Lord, Jehovah), Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner), Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd), Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals),
Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There), Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness), El Olam (The Everlasting God), Elohim (God), El Shaddai (Almighty God), Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide) Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace), Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts), God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, I AM, King of Kings. These are only a handful of the names of God mentioned
in the Old Testament. It was prophesied in Isaiah 7 of a child to be born that would be named Immanuel then again in Isaiah 9 saying He shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. In Matthew 1 the angel tells Joseph that He will be called Emmanuel just after he mentions the name. That name, the most precious name, the only name given among men whereby we must
be saved. The name of the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, the name of the One which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. The name above all names, the One true God, JESUS!!! We get to know Him by name. I hope you understand the magnitude of that. All the Old Testament heroes of faith we talk about, they never got to know Him, like we can. Then we can take on His name in
baptism. Galatians 3:26-27 KJV 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. What a wonderful privilege and opportunity we are presented with. Let’s never forget this.
Philippians 2:9-11 KJV 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
