The Missing Peace

In Ephesians 6:11 Paul instructs us to put on the whole armour of God.

He then lists the armor: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:14-17 KJV). Did you know though that there is another piece not mentioned here? A piece that brings peace.

You see Paul was basing this on the roman armor that he had observed. There is a piece of Roman armor that he didn’t mention here. The subarmalis, this was a padded garment worn under the armor. Made of wool or linen, the subarmalis provided additional comfort and protection, reducing the risk of chafing and bruising from the metal segments. This tunic was  to stop their armour and helmet rubbing against their neck. Now how is this important? Remember when David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod (2 Samuel 6:14 KJV). You catch that? The linen ephod, the same material used in the subarmalis. One thing this linen ephod represented was praise.

This was the missing piece, the garment of praise that is given

for the spirit of heaviness (Isaiah 61:3 KJV).  Why the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness? Because these things get heavy without the garment of praise. Without having praise as part of your being we can become weary in well doing. Praise keeps our eyes off of our problems and on God. Praise reminds us of who we are serving and keeps us moving forward.

So if you’re missing peace, if your walk with God seems to be getting heavy, if things seem to be rubbing you the wrong way. Spend some time in praise. Put on the garment of praise.

Psalm 61:8 KJV So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.
