James 4:6-10 KJV 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
Psalm 35:13 KJV But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.
2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
It says in Psalm 35 I humbled my soul with fasting. Humble in this verse in the Hebrew means: to afflict, oppress, humble, be afflicted, be bowed down. Plus, it clearly says that he humbled himself with fasting.
In 2 Chronicles it speaks of humbling themselves and praying. Humble in this verse in the Hebrew means: to be humble, be subdued, be brought down, be low, be under, be brought into subjection. That sounds like fasting to me.
So, we can deduce that humbling in these scriptures is done by fasting. Look at James again.
•He gives more grace.
•He gives grace unto the humble.
•Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
•Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
•Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. (Sounds like 2 Chronicles)
•Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
Again that sounds like fasting.
If we want God to draw near to us, if we want the lifting up, if we want God to hear us from heaven, if we want our land healed. Then we must humble ourselves through fasting.
