Taste Test

One day I was eating pizza for lunch. When I bit into it I thought, “this is really good.” I had never had this type of pizza before. I finished the first piece and started eating the second piece, by the second bite I thought, “I really don’t like this pizza.” Just that quickly my taste had changed. Just that quickly I no longer liked what I was eating. I did research it and, yes, your taste palate can change while eating, and even during a single meal.

You see sin is this way. You may look at its allure and think you may enjoy it. And indeed sin can be enjoyable for a season as we see in Hebrews 11:25 (KJV) enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. The thing is, seasons end. Don’t be fooled, just because you’re having fun right now doesn’t mean that everything is fine. Just like the taste of the pizza it can quickly take a turn. As it’s been said, sin will take you further than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay and make you pay more than you want to pay. Just because you feel free to do whatever you want doesn’t mean that you are free. Jesus answered them, “I tell you the solemn truth, everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin (John 8:34 NET).

Another story I’d like to share is this. I had a friend (who we will call Roy) that had a package of hog head cheese. Roy was eating it with the package rolled back which made the label not visible. A coworker of his walked up and asked if he could have some of what Roy was eating. To which Roy offered freely. Roy said that the guy was eating so much of it that he decided to just cover it up so he didn’t eat all of it. This revealed the label. When the coworker saw the label he asked if that is what that was. Roy said, “yes it is.” The guy began to gag and ran outside and vomited. Moments earlier he couldn’t get enough. Now whether you like hog head cheese or not the point is the same.

Many people gag at the thought of the gospel. They can’t get past the idea of it. They have heard all these bad things about it and expect it to taste bad. They look at the ingredients and think there’s no way this can be good. I say as the Word says taste and see that the LORD is good (Psalm 34:8 KJV).

My wife used to have the habit that as soon as food hit my mouth she’d ask me how it tasted. I kept telling her to give me a chance to chew it a little. Give me a chance to taste it.

Some of you need to chew on the Word of God a little. Some of you need to chew on faith a little. Some of you need to taste and see. Don’t just take somebody’s word for it, taste it for yourself. Let God change your mind. Let Him change your heart. Give it a chance. Taste and see.

Romans 6:16-18 KJV 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Romans 6:22-23 KJV 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
