My son Joshua and I were having a discussion about suits. For anyone that wears a suit you go through great pains to keep them clean. You don’t just do anything in a suit. You don’t put yourself in situations that could cause you to get your suit dirty. You see, if you get your suit dirty it is not as easy to clean as regular clothing. It requires special care to clean. Not to mention that you purchase suits at a great cost. Maybe you aren’t a suit wearer, but I’m sure you have something you wear that you won’t wear just anywhere. Something that is valuable to you.
Shouldn’t we be as concerned to protect our souls? Shouldn’t we try to stay clean from contaminants that could stain our souls? As James would write we should keep ourselves unspotted from the world or as another version says keep oneself uncontaminated by the [secular] world (James 1:27 AMP). We should be careful what we “rub” up against. We should pay attention to where we go and what we do. That we may stay clean of sin that could creep up on us and stain our souls.
Yes we can get forgiveness. We should strive to keep ourselves from situations that raise the potential to stain our garments so to speak. But be holy now in everything you do, just as the Lord is holy, who invited you to be his child. He himself has said, “You must be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:15-16 TLB). Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV). So wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong (Isaiah 1:16 NIV).
1 John 2:15-17 KJV
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Psalm 19:13 NIV
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression.
