Pointing In The Right Direction

The Feast of Tabernacles, or Sukkot, (also known as the Feast of Booths or the Feast of Tents) was a Jewish festival that commemorated the Israelites’ 40-year journey through the wilderness after leaving Egypt, a time when they lived in temporary dwellings called booths. Each day of the Feast of Tabernacles a priest would pour an offering of water from the Pool of Siloam onto the altar, simultaneously with a drink offering of wine. Water drawn from the Pool of Siloam was considered “living water” because it was flowing, fresh water from the Gihon Spring (which means bursting forth). There are different things that this action represented, but the most prevalent is that it was connected with God’s promise of living water and the outpouring of the Spirit. It is understood that this prophecy came from Isaiah 12:3 (KJV) Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

This Feast of Tabernacles was the feast that Jesus was at in John 7:37-39 (KJV)  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.  He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

As the priests were pouring out the “living water” from the pool of Siloam, Jesus said this. This was a proclamation that the Holy Ghost was that living water that those that believe on Jesus should receive. He was pointing his finger forward to what they could receive if they believed on Him.

This pool of Siloam is the pool that Jesus told the man who had been blind from birth (John 9:1 NET) to go wash in. After he spat on the ground and made some mud with the saliva. He smeared the mud on the blind man’s eyes and said to him, “Go wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated “sent”). So the blind man went away and washed, and came back seeing (John 9:6-7 NET).

Later in the chapter the Pharisees… asked him, “We are not blind too, are we (John 9:40 NET)?”

This was a spiritual blindness. They couldn’t see who Jesus was and they didn’t understand when He told them about the living water in reference to the Holy Ghost.

Speaking to His Disciples He points forward again towards the Holy Ghost. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high (Luke 24:49 KJV). But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8 KJV).

We see this power displayed in the next chapter as the Holy Ghost is poured out. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Act 2:1-4 KJV).

Then Peter began to explain to those there what was going on and told of another prophecy that was pointing to the outpouring of the Holy Ghost. This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams (Act 2:16-17 KJV).

There is still another prophecy that points to the Holy Ghost in Isaiah 28:11 (KJV) For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

Why am I telling you all of this? The Old Testament pointed towards the outpouring of the Holy Ghost. Jesus pointed to the outpouring of the Holy Ghost. This means that we should pay attention to what is being pointed towards. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call (Acts 2:39 KJV).

I would say as Paul said, have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed (Acts 19:2 KJV)?

John 4:14 KJV But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
