My Daddy loved for us to plant a garden. We would plant large gardens with all types of vegetables. When we planted seeds, we always put multiple seeds in one hole. We never put one seed, because you just didn’t know if they would produce. The thing is if we didn’t plant we wouldn’t have a harvest.
Let’s look at the parable of sower in Luke.
Luke 8:5-8 KJV 5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
We often focus on the soil in this parable. I would like to look at it a different way. Let’s look at the sower. You’ll notice something about the sower. He didn’t discriminate in planting the seed. He planted the seed on all ground. It didn’t matter that it didn’t look like good ground. He didn’t get all the stuff out of the ground first, no he planted the seed. It didn’t matter what he thought the outcome might be. He planted the seed.
Now we understand that the seed is the word of God (Luke 8:11 KJV). We are supposed to spread this seed to others. It doesn’t matter what we think the outcome may be. It doesn’t matter if we think that they will receive it or not. We don’t wait until they get their life cleaned up. We are supposed to sow the seed. We are supposed to talk about the Word of God. We are supposed to tell people about Jesus.
With that thought I want to address something else about sowing seed. I think too often if we don’t lead someone all the way through salvation that we see what we’ve done as a failure. We don’t recognize that it is a success if we lead someone one step closer to God. We don’t see the success of a seed planted. If we don’t see the harvest we don’t think that we accomplished anything. Every seed planted though is an accomplishment.
Now maybe we didn’t get to plant the seed. Maybe we came behind and watered the seed. Maybe we helped weed the area so the seed could produce. Maybe we helped break up the ground. All these are part of the harvest and none of these are in vain.
Just because we may not see the bloom, just because we may not see the fruit doesn’t mean that we failed. We aren’t the ones that can make it grow anyway. It is God who makes it grow (1 Corinthians 3:7 NHEB).
So plant the seed because the seed is good. Don’t worry about the outcome, plant the seed. Don’t try to decide if it’s good soil, plant the seed. Go and plant the seed.
Ecclesiastes 11:6 KJV In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
