I knew a couple once that had left Alexandria, Louisiana headed to Natchitoches. They got to talking and not really paying attention to where they were that they totally passed up their exit. Not only that exit, but they passed six exits and traveled 34 miles past their destination. I mean talk about not paying attention.
We can experience this same thing in our walk with God. When we get distracted, we begin to ignore the “road signs” He has placed in our path to give us direction. We can bypass every single indicator until we finally look around and wonder, “How did I get here?” God will try to get your attention quickly if you start to veer of course. There comes a point that we ignore the fact that we are distracted and the direction that God is trying to give us. There is a grave difference in an unintentional misalignment that you correct when noticed and continuing forward despite the warning signs.
To go beyond where God wants you, you have to ignore the warning signs. If you aren’t where He wants you, you aren’t in His will and that misalignment eventually starts to show. It may show up in the form of places you go or conversations that don’t seem to bother any more. You’ll notice a decline in your spiritual disciplines: you pray less, read your Bible less, and attend church less. You simply cannot bypass God’s plan without ignoring the signs He puts up to stop you.
We must remain vigilant because we cannot afford to drift off course.
Hebrews 2:1: “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away”.
