I was privy to a conversation between two gentlemen once that I’d like to share with you here. One had bought a 2 part gift and presented it to the man and his wife. Once they received the gift the man receiving the gift told the other that he didn’t want part of it. They went back and forth until the recipient said to him, “I don’t need it and I don’t want it!” Finally the other man, though offended, gave in and kept the other part of the gift. It was a free gift, but he just didn’t see his need for it. Not only that he didn’t consider that the man had thoughtfully gotten the gift for him at his own cost.
Do we find ourselves arguing with Jesus about what he wants to give us? Do we find ourselves liking things just like they are and not wanting what Jesus is offering? Or maybe we think that we don’t necessarily need what He is offering. Now maybe we don’t think we are actually arguing with Jesus, because we haven’t had that conversation with Him. Maybe though Jesus has sent someone to you and you argued with them. Like Nathaniel argued with Philip in John 1:45-51. Nathaniel begins arguing, but finally goes with Philip and has an experience with Jesus thus becoming a disciple. Jesus had so much more for Nathaniel than he had, but Nathaniel had to be willing to receive it.
Jesus has paid the ultimate price for us. If He offers something freely, we should not offend Him and turn our noses up at it. We should keep on desiring the better gifts. (1 Corinthians 12:31 ISV)
We should be careful and make sure that we don’t find ourselves fighting against what God wants for us.
Acts 5:39 KJV But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
