Porcupines are mostly known for their quills which is their self defense mechanism. They are solitary creatures, except during winter when they may den in small groups. Interestingly enough a group of porcupines is called a family.
Have you ever met or been the person that was like a porcupine? They typically keep others at arms length. They keep up this self defense to protect themselves from being hurt. The problem is we’re not porcupines. We’re not supposed to be alone. God even said in Genesis 2:18 (KJV) It is not good that the man should be alone. It’s not good for us to be alone for many reasons. Staying alone, or experiencing social isolation and loneliness, can have significant negative impacts on both physical and mental health, potentially leading to increased risks for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression, anxiety, dementia, and even earlier death. Too many times people going through depression or anxiety isolate themselves. Unfortunately this just compounds the problem.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NET 9 Two people are better than one, because they can reap more benefit from their labor. 10 For if they fall, one will help his companion up, but pity the person who falls down and has no one to help him up. 11 Furthermore, if two lie down together, they can keep each other warm, but how can one person keep warm by himself? 12 Although an assailant may overpower one person, two can withstand him. Moreover, a three-stranded cord is not quickly broken.
Just like in this scripture I remember my Daddy telling me a story about something his Dad taught him. He told Daddy to grab a stick and break it. After he did this he told him to grab a handful of sticks and try and break them. He could not break them. Grandpa told him if you stick together with others you’re stronger. You’ll find strength in being around others. They can help you carry your burden and you can help them carry theirs. Don’t be like a porcupine and keep a defense up so that nobody can get in to help. Let your guard down and become family with others.
Galatians 6:2 KJV Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Proverbs 18:1 NET One who has isolated himself seeks his own desires; he rejects all sound judgment.
