I was working on a project around the house one day. At some point I looked down, and I saw something all over my pants leg. There seemed to be hundreds of them. I’ve always called them hitchhikers, I’m sure different parts of the country call them different things. I stopped the project and started pulling them off. I got so consumed by them that I didn’t realize how long I had been working on it. I finally said you know what I’ll get them when I’m done with the project.
Too often we are living for God and trying to do His will and we get distracted by something. We get caught up trying to fix the distraction that we lose track of time. Sometimes it’s not a bad thing. It may be something that needs to be taken care of, but not if it is distracting us from something more important. Sometimes we get so distracted by the task at hand that we overlook the eternal things.
We find this very thing happening with Martha in the book of Luke.
Luke 10:40-42 NET 40 But Martha was distracted with all the preparations she had to make, so she came up to him and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work alone? Tell her to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the best part; it will not be taken away from her.”
What if we get so busy in our day that we forget to pray, to read the Word, to spend time with Jesus? What if we’re so busy ordering our food that we neglect those that are waiting on us. What if we are so busy buying what we need at the store that we neglect the cashier. What if we’re so busy doing business that we neglect those around us. Those are souls and they are eternal, that means they are more important than our temporary situation. Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us,(Hebrews 12:1 WEB). Remember some things may not be sins, but they may be weights.
We need to prioritize what needs to be done and what can wait. Always have in mind is this what I need to be focused on right now.
Ephesians 5:15-16 ISV So, then, be careful how you live. Do not be unwise but wise, making the best use of your time because the times are evil .
