His Ways

I once heard a story about Elijah. Now, the story I heard was not a Bible story. If it’s true or not, I do not know. The story was of a young man that sought out the prophet, wanting to follow him. Once he found Elijah, he was given one rule. The rule was to never question what Elijah did, for if he did from that point he could no longer follow him. The young man agreed. The two journeyed along the way and came upon a city.  As they approached the men of the city that were digging an aqueduct. Elijah approached them and told them that he was the prophet Elijah, servant of the God of Israel. He informed them that he was looking for lodging. The men replied that they knew who he was and his God, and he was not welcome there. So Elijah and the young man left. Once they reached the top of the hill, Elijah removed his mantle and smote the ground. Immediately the aqueduct was complete and water was flowing to the city. The men of the city began to rejoice, but the young man was confused. He did not ask Elijah about it though. Next, they came upon a widow woman and her son. Elijah again introduced himself and the woman replied that she knew who he was and his God and they were welcome to stay. She prepared them lodging and food, though she didn’t have much and only having one cow. They spent the night and left the next morning.  As they approached the top of the hill Elijah turned and smote the ground with his mantle and the cow dropped dead. The young man could take it no longer. He said, “I know that I can’t follow you after asking this question, but I must know, why did you bless those who cursed us and curse those who blessed us?” Elijah told him, “The men of the city digging the aqueduct were only feet away from a gold vane that would’ve blessed their city for years. By completing the aqueduct they will never find the gold. Last night the death angel arrived to take the widow woman’s son and I prayed through the night to trade the cow for the son.

I wanted to share this story with you, because when it comes to God and His ways, you will come across something you don’t understand. Not only will you not understand it, you may disagree with it. We have to understand that God’s ways are higher than our ways. When we don’t understand, we must trust Him.

Isaiah 55:8-9 KJV 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Romans 11:33 KJV O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
