I can see it now. A little girl sitting on the playground with a flower. She pulls a petal from the flower and says, “He loves me.” She pulls another petal from the flower and says, “He loves me not.” She continues this routine until she runs out of petals. She hopes that the last petal will end with, “He loves me.” It’s a game of chance so who knows the end result.
I think too many people play this game with the love of God. They are living right and doing good and they think, “He loves me.” Then they mess up and think, “He loves me not.” Everything is going good in life and the blessings are pouring in, “He loves me.” Things are going wrong and you don’t know what to do, “He loves me not.” They repeat this vicious cycle bouncing back and forth over if God really loves them.
Let me help you with this. He loves you! No matter the circumstance. No matter what you’ve done. No matter how far or close you are. He loves you. You may think, “you don’t know what I’ve done.” God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8 NET).
If while we were sinners Jesus died for us and showed His love then why are you struggling with it now? Stop believing the lie of the enemy. Stop looking down on yourself like you’ve somehow out sinned the grace and love of Christ. He loves you, even though you don’t understand it. As it says in Ephesians 3:19 (NLT) May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. It’s okay if you don’t understand it, just believe it.
I’ll tell you a story about myself. I once was struggling with this. I was praying and said, “God how can you love me?” At this point my then young son Joshua reached for me to pick him up. I felt the Lord give me this answer, “Because you’re my child.” We love our children because they are our children. Not because they did something to deserve it. We just love them.
So when the petals of life begin to fall around you remember this and say, “He loves me, He loves me, He loves me!”
1 John 4:16 NET And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has in us. God is love…
John 15:9 ISV Just as the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. So abide in my love.
