The great blue heron can hunt day and night thanks to a high percentage of rod-type photoreceptors in their eyes that improve their night vision. They also have great depth perception, helping them see fish deep in the water. They have long legs that enable them to wade through water.
They are also very patient. They can move very slow or just stand there until a fish comes close enough to catch. At this point they use their dagger-like beaks to quickly catch a fish.
Great Blue Herons often congregate at fish hatcheries, creating potential problems for the fish farmers. Though a study found that herons ate mostly diseased fish that would have died shortly anyway. Because the sick fish spent more time near the surface of the water. When they find a good hunting spot they will take advantage of it.
If they aren’t hunting or seeing anything they take that time for self maintenance. Using their beak and long neck to manage feathers to keep them healthy so that he can fly.
Now just like people, herons catch fish to eat. Jesus said in Matthew 4:19 KJV …. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. We are called to fish for men, to win souls. We should be like the heron in many aspects. Looking day and night (not just the physical, but the dark times in our lives) for a soul to win. We should be focused to see someone deep in sin, even though they look like they are uninterested. We need to be able to wade through the waters of life so that we can reach the lost.
We must be patient, often slowly winning someone to the Lord. Ready though to move in an instance when they are ready.
We need to be where the souls are. The world wants to keep souls trapped in sin. We must reach those that are hurting and diseased with the pains of this life. If we see a place where we can reach many souls we must take advantage of it.
We must continue to do self maintenance asking God to guide us and remove anything that would hinder us.
We must be ever vigilant of the lost souls around us, constantly and consistently reaching for them.
Proverbs 11:30 KJV The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
Jude 1:22-23 KJV 22 And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
