I had been searching for a new desk for my office. It wasn’t easy because the doorway into my office is unusually narrow, which ruled out most of the desks I found.
After a long search, I finally found the perfect one. Someone was moving and needed it gone quickly. They had dropped the price from $200 to… free.
It was a solid oak desk, and it would fit in my office perfectly.
I was excited. I thought, All right, I’m fixing to get me a new desk.
Unfortunately, because of circumstances beyond my control, I wasn’t able to get it.
For a moment, I was disappointed.
Then I remembered a lesson God has taught me over the years.
Every blessing isn’t meant for me. Some blessings are meant for somebody else.
That’s not always easy to accept. We see an opportunity pass by and think, That would’ve been perfect for me. We can even wonder why God allowed it to slip through our fingers.
But sometimes God simply has someone else in mind.
If we believe God is directing our steps, then we also have to believe He directs what passes by us.
Not every open door is our door.
Not every opportunity is our opportunity.
And not every blessing has our name on it.
Remember that the Word says it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Sometimes giving isn’t just giving away what we already possess. Sometimes it’s surrendering what we wished had been ours and trusting that God knows exactly what He’s doing.
If God let that blessing pass you by, it may simply be because He was delivering it to someone else who was also in need. At the same time He hasn’t forgotten about you.
Instead of being disappointed when someone else receives what we hoped for, we can choose to celebrate with them. As it says in Romans 12:15 (KJV) Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
Every blessing isn’t ours. Sometimes God has someone else in mind, and that’s okay because He hasn’t forgotten us. If we’ll trust His timing, we’ll discover that His plans are always better than our own.
Psalm 37:7 KJV
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way…
