Driving The Point

The phrase “drive the point home” (or “drive something home”) originates from the literal action of hammering a nail until it is fully embedded in its destination or its “home”.

Whether you’re driving nails into something you’ll find out there are many different ways to drive these in and many different types of nails. Some examples are using a handheld hammer, you can use an air gun, or even a powder-actuated tool (PAT) that uses .22 caliber blank loads, which contain gunpowder but no actual projectile (bullet).

When driving nails, you may need to drill a pilot hole; ranging from a simple bore in wood to the more intensive use of a hammer drill in concrete. In either case, you are tearing through the material to fasten something new and build something better. Success requires matching the correct tool and method to the application; otherwise, you risk damaging your workpiece or creating a weak, unreliable connection.

You must also understand the material you’re working with. Is it structural, finish, or somewhere in between? Is it the strength that supports the wall, is it the wall board that goes upon the 2x4s or is it simply the trim? For you never use finish nails to put a wall together nor would you use framing nails to attach trim boards.

When trying to drive a point home in someone’s life we must realize that every person and situation may be different and need to be handled differently. You may have to help someone make room in their life, in their soul by rooting out what is in there. This may be a meticulous process carefully almost surgically removing what is in the way of the new. It may be a sudden seemingly aggressive action like pulling someone out of the fire. Each person and situation may need a different approach. A stern rebuke may be needed as Paul rebuked Peter. Paul’s harshness was well placed with Peter, but not with John Mark. John Mark needed gentleness as he received with Baranbas. You see it’s not a one size fits all way of delivery.

Either way whether in witnessing or preaching when we are trying to drive the point home in order to fully fasten the new to them it is imperative to use the right method and tools. We can damage someone if we handle this wrong. If we remember this that  everything you do should be done in love (1 Corinthians 16:14 NET) then it will help direct us. We must pray for wisdom and direction in every situation so that we do the right thing.

Jude 1 NIV

22 Be merciful to those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh
