Can You Keep A Secret?

We all know somebody who just can’t keep a secret. We quickly learn that if we don’t want the world knowing our business, we simply don’t tell them.

On the flip side, we also know people who are masters of discretion. This is the friend you can tell absolutely anything to, knowing it stops right there. People often refer to them as “vaults” because their loyalty is as secure as a locked safe. It is incredibly comforting to have these types of people in your life, someone you can bare your heart to, knowing your vulnerability is safe.

But have you ever considered that God looks for “vaults,” too?

Scripture shows us that God actually shares secrets with people. For instance, in 2 Corinthians 12:4, the Apostle Paul describes being caught up to paradise, where he “heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell.” We see it again in Daniel 12:4, when God explicitly commands the prophet to keep a revelation private for a season: “Roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end.” Even in the dramatic visions of Revelation 10:4, John hears a voice from heaven stop him mid-sentence: “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it.”

Why would an all-knowing God whisper something to a human being, only to tell them to keep it quiet? Usually, it comes down to three divine purposes. First, God often evaluates your stewardship and discretion through character testing in the quiet seasons before entrusting you with greater spiritual responsibilities. Second, a divine insight may be meant purely for personal growth, intended solely for your own comfort, correction, or spiritual maturity rather than public consumption. Finally, it often involves divine timing, meaning a revelation can be entirely true, but sharing it prematurely can cause unnecessary confusion or disrupt God’s perfect timeline.

If God has shown you something personally and you feel the Holy Spirit prompting you to hold onto it, honor that boundary. Guard that confidence. Be the kind of person God can trust with His whispers.

When God looks at your life, does He see a sieve or a vault? The next time you receive a profound insight or a quiet promise in prayer, don’t rush to post it or share it. Sit with it. Protect it. Prove to the Creator that you are a safe place for His mysteries.

Proverbs 11:13 a trustworthy person keeps a secret.
