The Old Testament Priest had many responsibilities. The office of the priesthood was a highly respected position. Many have spent hours of study about the priests and their duties. Much study has also gone into the priest’s garment and the intricate details that went into it. There is something or rather someone that most don’t think about. We find them here.
Exodus 28:3 NET You are to speak to all who are specially skilled, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, so that they may make Aaron’s garments to set him apart to minister as my priest.
Somebody had to make the garments. Yes there were people behind the scenes helping with the ministry. The same goes for the tabernacle. People had to make everything that was included with it. Then there were people that had to take it down and put it back up. There were those that transported everything from one place to another. These all worked behind the scenes. They served a very important part in ministry although they may have been unrecognized by most.
We see this in the New Testament in Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 12:28 (KJV) And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
Did you see it? You almost read over it when listing all the other gifts. The gift of helps. Yes, that is a gift. Someone that helps.
What does that mean? If you help in the church in any form. If you turn the lights on and off. If you work the sound system. If you sweep the floor. If you mow the grass. If you are a door greeter. If you do outreach. These are all help. These are things that keep the church running even if it is not seen. These are ministry.
I do have to add in listing the gifts and Paul begins to list the gifts afterwards. He begins asking do we all have this or that gift. He does not ask this about help, because we can all help in some capacity. So look for a place to help.
To those that are helping know that God sees your work. Even though you may feel that it’s insignificant, it is not. Anything you do for the kingdom is important. So take heart and fulfill your ministry (2 Timothy 4:5 NET).
1 Corinthians 15:58 KJV Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
