Not Permanent

I was talking to a friend of mine that works in maintenance in industry. He was telling me a story about something that happened on the job. His boss approached him and said, “You know what that group of guys over there just told me?” My friend replies, “What’s that?” He said they called him over and said, “Hey boss, the gearbox that they sent is the wrong gearbox, so the bolt holes wouldn’t line up. So we welded it in place.” Now I understand some of you might not get this, but you don’t weld gearboxes in place. What they should have done is contact someone about the issue to get it resolved. Instead they made a decision, nearly a permanent one. Yes, the gearbox could be removed now, but it was going to take a lot more work and probably cause damage when it got done.

Sometimes we find ourselves in situations and we don’t know what to do. If we are not careful we can make a permanent decision based on temporary circumstances. We should never make decisions like this. We should think about things, pray about them and seek advice. Don’t just make a decision because the pressure is high. Don’t quit a job because somebody made you mad. Don’t give up on your marriage because times are tough. Don’t walk away from God because you’re going through a trial. Tough times will come, but they are temporary and we shouldn’t be making permanent decisions based on them.

Proverbs 19:2 NET It is dangerous to have zeal without knowledge, and the one who acts hastily makes poor choices.
