The Wind

Have you ever had the wind take something right out of your hand and blow it away? I have and I have said, “Well, there it goes.” Because I knew that it was gone and I’d never be able to get it back.

How strong is the wind? The wind can take things from you. The wind can take down mighty trees. The wind can take down buildings, the wind can change the landscape. The wind can change the direction of things.

We read in Ephesians 4:14 KJV That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

We are not supposed to be tossed about by the wind. We aren’t supposed to be moved when we hear something that doesn’t align with sound doctrine. We aren’t supposed to be swayed by false teaching. If we are not attentive we can be caught off guard by the wind of some false idea of doctrine. Just like the natural wind doesn’t typically start blowing hard immediately, the winds of false doctrine may not either. It may start as what seems like a pleasant breeze. Something that makes you feel good. Because it makes you feel good you think that it can’t be bad. The devil is referred to as the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2 KJV). So remember that every wind that blows is not of God. We must train ourselves to recognize when it doesn’t sound right even if it feels good. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).

Let’s look again at Ephesians 4:14-15 KJV 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

How do we avoid being tossed about? The answer lies in the next verse. By speaking truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ. We’re supposed to be speaking truth in love. We are supposed to be speaking life. For death and life are in the power of the tongue…(Proverbs 18:21 KJV). And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent (John 17:3 KJV).

If we are continually speaking negative things, then we can be swayed. If we are always talking worldly, then we can be swayed. Because we are speaking death. Avoid profane chatter, because those occupied with it will stray further and further into ungodliness (2 Timothy 2:16 NET).

We are to speak truth, we are to speak love. We are to speak the Word of God. If we do these things we are speaking life. For  the one who wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from uttering deceit. And he must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it (1 Peter 3:10-11 NET).

We read in James 3:4-5 KJV 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

The wind may try to toss us about, but if we have given control of our tongue (our helm) to God, then we will not be swayed. We will stay on course.

What did Jesus do when there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full (Mark 4:37 KJV)? He spoke to it.

So pay close attention to the words that come out of your mouth. Do this because they can determine your direction even if something is trying to turn you from the truth.

Titus 2:1 KJV But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine.

1 Timothy 4:6 KJV If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
