Have you ever looked at a Thomas Kinkade painting? The warm lights, quiet cottages, peaceful streams, and perfect sunsets make you wish you could step into the picture. Everything seems calm. Everything seems at peace.
But life isn’t a painting.
Life has bills, doctor’s appointments, broken relationships, unexpected phone calls, disappointments, grief, and uncertainty. It has storms, not just sunsets.
We often admire paintings because they portray a world without conflict, storms, or hardship. But Jesus never promised His disciples a life that looked like a peaceful painting. In fact, He warned them that trouble was coming. Yet, in that very same conversation, He promised the Comforter, the Holy Ghost. Then He said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:27 KJV)
The peace wasn’t found in the absence of trouble. It was found in the presence of the Comforter.
The Holy Ghost doesn’t remove every storm from our lives. He becomes our Comforter in the storm and gives us a peace the storm cannot steal.
The world longs to live inside a peaceful painting. God offers something greater: a peaceful heart that can live faithfully in a broken world.
Philippians 4:7 (KJV)
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
