Fear Not

When I was probably 9 or 10 years old, my family and I were walking down an old road near our home. At the end of this road, there was a graveyard. While we were walking, my Daddy tells me if I go into the graveyard and knock on one of the gravestones and ask, “What are you doing,” they’ll say nothing. Well, at that age I didn’t understand that the joke was they wouldn’t say anything, you know they’d say nothing. So he got me convinced to try. He and my mom turned off to go down an old trail in the woods before we got to the graveyard, so my sister, Brenda, walked with me to it. I was already scared to walk in there, but I did anyway. As I reached the gravestone, I lifted my hand to knock. This is when the sickest sounding cow that I have ever heard let out a long “mooooooo” from towards the back of the graveyard. I never touched the stone. I was picking them up and putting them down as fast as I could!  My sister was laughing too hard to keep up. I didn’t stop running until I got to my Daddy.

Just like me in this story, we often get things so worked up in our heads over things. We “borrow trouble” as they say. We think of every scenario of how this or that could go wrong and if anything goes slightly wrong we lose it. We are full of worry, anxiety and fear that we crumble at the first sign of adversity.

I’ve heard it said that worry is not trusting that God will take care of you. If you have trouble and you will if you live long enough, it doesn’t take God by surprise and it doesn’t overwhelm Him. He made the world and everything in it. What could possibly happen that He couldn’t handle? Remember that He’s got this and He will watch out for you.

So let go of your fear and anxiety, let it die and quit resuscitating it. He didn’t give it to you so why keep it? Turn it loose, learn to trust in God. He is watching over us.

Isaiah 41:10 KJV Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

2 Timothy 1:7 KJV For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
