Liberty for the Bruised

Have you ever struck your fingernail on something so hard that you caused a black spot to form underneath it? Medically this is known as a subungual hematoma, while in everyday terms, it is simply called a bruised nail. This is caused by breaking the small blood vessels under the nail. It typically takes 6 to 9 months for a fingernail to fully regrow and the spot to disappear, while toenails can take up to 12 to 18 months.

Sometimes we have things that happen to us that may not leave a visible scar, but they may leave hidden damage underneath the surface. The damage may be to your heart. And often we hold onto this pain for a long time. We may forget about it from time to time. Then something reminds us of it. We may have thought that we got over it, but something happens to remind us and suddenly we recall the pain.

Or maybe you’ve looked at it everyday and wondered why you can’t just heal from this. You may have guarded it because it was too painful to deal with at first, but now you’ve gotten used to it. You haven’t healed, you’ve just learned to deal with it. Learning to just deal with something isn’t healing, it’s just being numb to it.

Understand that forgiveness is the first step in healing. If you have an underlying hurt, stop right now and forgive the perpetrator. This may be very hard for you depending on the hurt inflicted. Understand that for this you will need God’s help and He will help you. He will give you strength to do this and we can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth us. And ask Him to heal your heart. Jesus declared in Luke 4:18 (KJV)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor. He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. Are you brokenhearted, are you held captive by your pain, can you not see a way out,  are you bruised deep within your soul? Then come to Jesus that’s His speciality. He can heal you no matter how deep the hurt is.

Psalm 147:3 KJV

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

Psalm 34:18 NET

The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he delivers those who are discouraged.
