Covetousness, we are commanded not to be covetous. We find many examples through the Word of those that fell from being covetous. Achan, Gehazi, Ananias and Sapphira all serve as examples of this.
So if we have all of this serving as warnings, why would I suggest that you should be covetous? Well, I’m not the only one that has suggested it. Paul would write in 1 Corinthians 12:31 (KJV) But covet earnestly the best gifts… You see we can covet the things of God. A deeper relationship, a love for His Word, the gifts of the Spirit.
Here are a few examples from the Word:
Psalm 119:20 “My soul breaks with longing for Your judgments at all times.”
Psalm 119:72 “The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins of gold and silver.”
Job 23:12 “I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.”
1 Peter 2:2 “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.”
Psalm 42:1–2 “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”
Psalm 63:1 “O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You.”
You see this is the one time that we are allowed and even encouraged to be covetous, when we are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus. So I say go forth and be ye covetous.
Colossians 3:2 KJV Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Matthew 5:6 KJV “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”
