Fox Fire

When I was in high school I lived close enough to my bus driver that I would often walk to his house to get on the bus. He always left before daylight, so I walked in the dark to his house. One particular morning I was walking to his house and I saw something that caught my attention. There was a glow coming from a tree limb above the road that I walked on. I watched it as I approached and it never moved. I stopped and stared for a moment, but then walked on. To my recollection, I never told anyone about it because I figured nobody would believe me. Nearly 30 years later I was talking with a friend and somehow this story came up. He told me that this was probably fox fire. I had never heard of such a thing. Foxfire is a bioluminescent glow from certain fungi that grow on decaying wood. This “living glow” is caused by a chemical reaction within the fungus and is bright enough in some cases to be seen in the dark. Though I had a real experience, the thought that I couldn’t explain it or that I thought nobody would believe me stopped me from sharing this experience.

The followers of Jesus had a similar experience in Acts 2:4 (KJV) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. There was some confusion, doubt and mocking that happened afterwards from the crowd that was there. Fortunately the Disciples knew what had happened and how to explain it. We see Peter stand up with the other 11 Disciples and explain what was going on. After he gets through explaining this there were many added to the church that day. Understand this, that the crowd there already knew the verses that Peter referenced, but they still didn’t have an understanding of those verses. They needed it explained to them.

You may be in a similar situation. I believe some of you have had an experience with God that you keep to yourself. Why, because you cannot explain it and if you could you don’t think anyone would believe you. Or maybe you tried to explain it and you got mocked. Maybe the enemy has told you that you didn’t really have that experience and it was all in your head. Just like with my experience with fox fire, you need someone knowledgeable that can explain to you what it is that you experienced. Just like the Disciples explained the outpouring of the Holy Ghost.

Remember just because you can’t explain something or don’t understand it doesn’t mean that it is not true. I can’t explain quantum physics and it is not visible with the naked eye, so I can’t just show it to someone, but it is real. So if you have had an experience with God, don’t go to the crowd for an explanation of what they don’t understand and aren’t acquainted with. Remember just as the crowd in Acts chapter 2 knew the verses that Peter quoted and didn’t understand them. There are those that you can go to that may quote Bible verses to you, but not have an understanding of your experience. Find someone that knows about it. If you ask someone and they don’t know, then find someone else. Don’t quit on this journey until you get answers. Don’t doubt or hide your experience but seek to know more about it.

Proverbs 4:7 ISV Wisdom is of utmost importance, therefore get wisdom, and with all your effort work to acquire understanding.
